Hyland top of pile after title win

PATRICK ‘The Punisher’ Hyland now boasts the best 100% record of all Irish professional boxers after Saturday night’s WBF title win on points over Frenchman Philippe Frenois at the National Stadium.

Hyland top of pile after title win

Hyland made it 23 consecutive victories as he overcame the rugged Frenois to lift the WBF featherweight crown.

The Tallaght native had to maximise his power and punching ability against a demanding opponent on a night that saw brothers Paulie and Eddie also record wins at super bantamweight and light middleweight respectively.

“It was a tough fight but there was never any doubt that Patrick was going to get the decision and win the belt,” said Paddy Hyland, the fighter’s father, promoter and trainer.

Brian Peters has a show planned for August or September but if that doesn’t work out we will look at the Stadium again after a great night on Saturday.”

It was a memorable night for Hyland’s other sons. He said: “Paulie stopped Hyusein Hyuseinov in the fifth in his first outing since the Willie Casey fight and Eddie won in the third against Asen Vasilev, so it was a good bill all round for the lads.”

Cork’s Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan stopped Robbie Long with a first-round knock-out in their Irish middleweight title fight while Belfast’s Ciaran Healy won his super middleweight battle with Brendan Fitzpatrick from Finglas with a last-round stoppage.

Finbarr Eade was knocked to the canvas in the sixth round of his super featherweight fight with Radoslav Mitav but still won on points.

Unbeaten Clondalkin lightweight prospect Stephen Ormond scored a fifth-round win over Bulgaria’s Valentin Stoychev.
