The filth being flung at Hodgson is disgraceful
Those in the stands at the Reebok did their absolute best to sing the team to a much-needed and increasingly rare away victory in the league – two so far in 2010.
The future of the manager, oft-presumed short and bleak, is a happy irrelevance when points are priceless.
The drones on the internet, well they’re another story.
It’s an intriguing vantage point for me. Without ever really believing Roy was much use or a rational choice as Rafa’s replacement, there’s been inevitable distaste for the witch-hunt that has, incredibly, become worse since we started winning.
Under normal circumstances I’d be leading the charge shouting “gerrim” but some of the obnoxious filth being flung in Hodgson’s direction is disgraceful. This must be what a lab technician feels like, coldly watching the mice turn nasty on their unnatural high. The folks who know how I’ve written over the years will laugh and snort; “isn’t this exactly what you did to Benitez?”
As much as I want that can of worms shut tight, they have a point. If it’s quid pro quo for last season’s bitching, what can you do but shrug sheepishly?
At least I’ve got respect for Rafa’s sanity, intelligence and ability. One look at the state Liverpool were (still are) in and one look at Inter, who in their right mind would have chosen otherwise? The lovelorn still flatly refuse to believe they were dumped and the outrage over Hodgson consumes them whole. Hilarious, isn’t it?
Would a truce be called when someone else gets the job? Who can say, except to reiterate that one thing will decide whether anyone’s worthy of loyalty or not; results. Even some decent football wouldn’t go amiss.
That’s two wins in a row, so watch out for those nosebleeds. Bolton’s been a stroll since Allardyce slithered to the ‘big job’ he is still whining about never getting, atrocious crackpot that he is.
Megson was a pushover but it was predicted that Coyle would be a greater threat. You see some Reds nod appreciatively whenever his name’s linked to us, and pundits seem entranced by this 180-degree shift in Wanderers’ approach.
Could have fooled me. They play for free kicks, whine incessantly and Davies is a diving thug.
I thought we did okay for the most part, and the real Torres would have had two goals by half time. Earlier results had the eggheads working out where we could be by 6 o’clock and how many goals were needed to achieve it. One; don’t ever jinx it like that. Two; as if tenth would be any more placatory than twelfth right now. Just win, will ya?
And they did. Just. After euphoria died down some intimated Fernando’s flick was not so much typical genius as lazy and lucky. There’s no pleasing some, but he does look distinctly hangdog most of the time. Is it coincidence that Maxi played well in both wins? Much as our last few managers have given scant attention to the wings, Kuyt played such an important part in the 86 points of 2009 that it’s tempting to suggest it’s a key role.
The Argentine certainly helped Torres in his awful isolation, more than Gerrard certainly. Rumours of contract clauses were slapped down swiftly by NESV, though yesterday’s meeting with Hodgson merely whipped up a batch of new ones.
Like the Victorians in Bedlam, let’s have one last trip to Crazytown before Drogba puts Roy out of our misery.
Or so ‘they’ say…
