Historic day at Yankees’ new home

FANS of the New York Yankees queued up all yesterday morning for their first glimpse of the baseball franchise’s new ballpark in the Bronx.

Historic day at Yankees’ new home

And on a day of ceremony fit to match its storied history, the first pitch at the new stadium was handed to Yankees legend Yogi Berra, the 83-year-old setting the home opener against Cleveland in motion just after 1pm.

Kelly Clarkson was on national anthem duty while the West Point Marching Band performed John Philip Sousa’s “Washington Post March” and “Stars and Stripes Forever”, a choice which harked back to the original Yankee Stadium’s opener on April 18, 1923 when Sousa performed on field. To smooth the transition, the home plate and pitching rubber used yesterday were the same set that closed out the old Yankee Stadium but ultimately it mattered little as the Cleveland Indians ran out 10-2 winners.
