Promising pair prepare to face off in rare all-Dublin contest

IRISH boxing has a wealth of middleweight talent and two promising newcomers to the pro scene will be involved in an all-Dublin contest when DolPhil stage an eight-bout show at the City West Hotel on January 30.

Promising pair prepare to face off in rare all-Dublin contest

Anthony Fitzgerald won his debut fight by a single point against Lithuania’s Kirill Pshonko in Killarney on the October Bank Holiday weekend.

The same night fellow Dubliner Robbie Long, appearing in his second professional fight, saw off the Latvian, Sandris Thomson, in the third round.

And fans were quickly talking about an early showdown between the pair.

“This is going to be the fight of the night,” said Corkman Don O’Leary who heads up DolPhil Promotions with the former European bronze medallist, Phil Sutcliffe.

“I can’t remember two Dubliners going head-to-head on a professional bill so the fight was always going to attract a lot of attention. I understand that numerous bets have already been struck.”

The bill will also feature Limerick featherweight, Willie “Big Bang” Casey, against Valentine Morozovs from Latvia.

Casey was also a winner at the INEC in Killarney in October when he stopped Carlos Caolho De Jesus of Brazil two minutes into the second round with one of his trademark right hands.

John “The Warrior” Waldron from Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo, lost to the more experienced Ciaran Healy from Belfast, who boxed Andy Lee earlier in the year, when they met in Killarney but he is out to get his first professional win against James Tucker, Sheffield, on this show.

Lightweight, Stephen Ormond, a three time Irish senior champion and seasoned amateur international, had a brilliant pro debut in Killarney where he won every round against Juris Ivanovs, also of Latvia.

He did enough to have his trainer Phil Sutcliffe beaming and will face another East European, Nicolas Kasenko from Riga, at City West.

Cruiserweight Ian Tims did well to hang on in Killarney after sustaining a broken left hand against Remigijujs Ziausys (Lithuania) but he got the verdict by two points.

The Dubliner, who has won all five of his professional contests, faces a more experienced opponent this time when he steps in against John Anthony, Leeds, who has a 6-9 record.

Two of the three Hyland brothers will be in action on the bill. Eddie meets Ayitey Mettle from Ghana and Patrick meets another Ghanaian, Alfred Tetteh, in his featherweight contest.

The promoters are looking for a suitable super middleweight for Louis Garcia, one of the three Cubans based with Gary Hyde in Cork, to complete what promises to be an exciting night’s boxing.
