THE final competition of the Irish Open Swimming Championships began in Lisburn yesterday with lower than usual entries from the junior swimmers due to the clash with the British Age Groups and Commonwealth Games trials.

However, the senior swimmers were present in force. Steven Manley, now swimming for University of Kentucky, showed his class in the 100m Individual Medley, setting a new Irish senior record in 56.06. His U.S team-mate Jerram Chudleigh took second (56.80) while Barry Murphy took bronze.

Manley also took the 400m Freestyle in 3.52.67, followed by Kevin Stacy, Coolmine (3.58.47)
