I was at a fundraising function in Irwin’s yard pub in Cahir on Saturday where Brendan Cummins and I got into a conversation about doing co-commentary on radio or TV. We weren’t exactly strategising or comparing notes, but we both came to the conclusion that the one requirement you needed for a solid showing with the mic in hand is a good game.

At this time of the year, that is never a guarantee. I was in the commentary box alongside Marty Morrissey in Thurles on Saturday night when the Tipp-Limerick game was effectively over before half-time. Colm Lyons could have blown up the game and told us all to go home as soon as he sent off Willie Connors just six seconds into the second half.
