Watching the fallout from Mo Salah’s now infamous mixed zone strop, I think of the old exam question in which you were asked to discuss the causes of the First World War.

This was always a good one because it didn’t make sense that something which led to the death of millions could be caused by an Austrian archduke with a funny moustache getting shot by a mad Serbian. So you had to think a bit deeper about things like military industrialisation and rivalry between in-bred European imperial dynasties.
