In all the horrendous violence that has befallen Israel and Palestine in recent weeks, the most harmless and inconsequential casualty has been the postponement of a sporting fixture involving an Irish team.

The national senior women’s basketball side were meant to fly out to Tel Aviv this day next week to play Israel in a FIBA Eurobasket 2025 qualifier on November 9, only for the decision to be taken last week to postpone the match; instead Ireland’s qualification campaign will begin with a home game in Tallaght on Sunday November 12 against Olympic and Eurobasket bronze medallists France.
