Although our hearts again bled for Stephen Kenny as he once more found himself having to make a case to Tony O’Donoghue as to why he should remain as Ireland manager, that latest apres-match interview was a reminder that both his tenure and our sympathy should stretch only so far.

After acknowledging that Ireland could no longer qualify automatically for Euro 2024, Kenny pointed out that they could still feature in a playoff in March, depending on results elsewhere.
