Craven Cottage has become something of a London home from home for the Irish team in recent years, last week’s game against Oman just the latest in a series of friendlies played there by the boys in green. And it’s always a singular pleasure to drop by.

The stadium on Stevenage Road might be a Premier League ground but not as we know it, its intimate proportions, sepia-tinted charm and glorious situation nestled in a crook of the tidal Thames making is seem a world and a century away from, say, Arsenal’s gleaming new palace across the city.
