Yesterday was a sad day for Irish golf with the revelation from Rory McIlroy that he is considering representing Team GB in the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

At the outset, I have to say I have no problems whatsoever with Rory’s allegiance to the British crown, given the fact that he is indeed from Northern Ireland, but what does irk me is the fact that Rory has now decided, somewhat selectively, to possibly use “the option” available to him to play for GB despite having played for Ireland throughout his entire career to date, be that as an amateur international or indeed in Ireland’s World Cup team.

Over the past 24 hours, I have spent a considerable amount of time trying to rationalise Rory’s remarks but try as I might, I am still astounded by them. For example:
