WITH five of the eight quarter-finalists coming from Ireland and France it appears strange that the national sides of both are left disappointed with mid-table finishes in the northern hemisphere’s trophy international tournament.

For whatever reason, Ireland and France under achieved in this season’s Six Nations but from the players’ perspective, a cherished Heineken Cup medal would amount to far more than a consolation prize.

That will become more than apparent over the weekend. Of the eight quarter-finalists, four have enjoyed ultimate success in the tournament with the other four striving to make the breakthrough in Europe’s premier club competition.
