Griffin double on the cards

THE National Hunt season is just about four months old now and it hasn't been the best of starts for trainer Eoin Griffin.

Griffin double on the cards

He has saddled just two winners and his strike rate is a lowly 4%. Griffin has a good chance of doubling the total, however, by landing a double at Bellewstown this evening.

His Lucky Wish, a talented, but somewhat enigmatic, sort will make short work of the opposition, in the betdaq.com Hurdle, if putting his best foot forward.

The six-year-old has 12lbs in hand of main rival, Fairwood Bob, and only has to reproduce his creditable third behind Bahrain Storm in the Galway Hurdle to oblige.

Griffin's St Devote is the nap choice in the Gosh Cosmetics Ladies' Bumper, with Nina Carberry booked to ride.

Again it is a case of the real St Devote turning up! He made an excellent start at Fairyhouse in April, when beaten a short head into second by Whispering Hills.

That form worked out nicely subsequently with the third and fourth respectively, Imperial Cascade and Case In Point, both winning next time.

St Devote, however, then went to the Punchestown Festival, where he started favourite, but performed dismally behind Nicky Henderson's Quantitativeeasing.

That Punchestown contest came only 13 days after his debut and, perhaps, it was asking too much too soon of the four-year-old!

Noel Meade's Asigh Pearl looks the one to beat in the McCabes' Garage Drogheda Mares Maiden Hurdle.

She had her first outing of the campaign at Kilbeggan earlier in the month and was entrusted with favouritism.

It ended in tears, though, because Asigh Pearl fell three out, when tracking the leaders and, apparently, full of running. Compensation, hopefully, awaits.
