Pat Ryan was trying to nail down a midfield spot with Cork. Derek Lyng was trying to nail down a panel spot with the Kilkenny u21s. Liam Cahill was 21 but had the best of his intercounty career behind him. Davy Fitz was the Clare goalkeeper and was on his way to becoming, well, Davy Fitz. And a few years earlier in the middle of the decade, a period they didn’t like to talk about, Limerick had possessed a sub called John Kiely.
Summer 1999. The last championship of the old century. There were endings and there were beginnings. Come the end of September nothing would be quite the same again.
