When the hurling season resumed last year, in the first week of February 2023, all the hurling public who had been starved of inter-county action over the previous five months, had their appetite initially sated on the opening night of the opening weekend. The GAA put on the main course first, where Cork and Limerick served up a delightful and tasty dish.

The GAA had shown Galway-Wexford on TV beforehand as a starter but it was so flat and bland that there was zero satisfaction or taste on the plate. After Cork and Limerick served up that feast, everyone’s belly was rumbling again by the time the second round rolled around a week later - because the opening round action on the Sunday just produced crumbs, with the Dublin-Waterford draw providing the only decent nourishment.
