A 29-year-old man accused of assault causing harm to a prison officer was remanded in custody until October 15.
James Spillane who is of no fixed address in the Fermoy area of County Cork, was before Cork District Court by video link from prison on a charge of assault causing harm to the officer at Cork prison on Rathmore Road on March 20.
Sergeant Dave Delea said the Director of Public Prosecutions now directed prosecution on indictment but that a guilty plea could be entered at Cork District Court for sentencing at Cork Circuit Criminal Court.
Judge Philip O’Leary adjourned the case for the defence to consider the matter in this regard.
Injuries to the prison officer included bruising, soft tissue damage to the left infra-orbital facial area, neck, left eye and trunk, it was previously stated in court.
The allegation in the case was that the prison officer was repeatedly punched in the face and that he was left with stiffness to the neck and limitation to his neck movement.
