The owners of this Ballincollig four-bed semi-d wanted all the benefits of a new house, but also were keen to make sure it didn’t stay looking bland or colourless.

So they opted for rich peacock blue walls in the front room, nicely offset by warm-coloured herringbone flooring and wood panelling either side of the TV.

Jenny and Peter are now moving to be closer to family so this A2-rated home at 6 The Meadows, in the Heathfield development in Carriganarra, is on the market for €625k.

“We wanted to try some funky colours on the walls as they are easily changed, and we went for simple wood-effect tile on the floors,” says Jenny.

The pair, who now have a two-year-old and an eight-week-old baby, bought the house as a new-build in 2022.

Some ultra modern home benefits they’ve enjoyed include an air-to-water heat pump heating system which contributes to the green mortgage-friendly energy rating.

Attractive touches include plantation shutters in the living room and a media wall in the sunroom which also has sliding doors to the back garden. There’s decorative wood panelling in the west-facing garden which has a patio and gets the sun from lunchtime right into the evenings, as evidenced by a thriving olive tree out front and healthy clumps of lavender.

There are four bedrooms upstairs and three of these have built-in wardrobes. The main bedroom has its own bathroom, complete with stylish art-deco style blue tiles.

Some neighbouring houses have already converted the attics — the attic here is floored and accessed via a Stira so new owners might be keen to maximise the space here.

The accessibility has been most welcome for Jenny and Peter: “There’s a creche, Cocoon Childcare, just around the corner [map apps put it at a very handy 300 metres away]; and Gaelscoil Uí Riordáin is at the entrance to the estate.

The great location and decor combo means it’s appealing strongly to families and couples, notes agent Jeremy Murphy of Jeremy Murphy & Associates: “It’s a stunner, it looks so well and you’ve excellent amenities here as well as convenient access to the city.”

VERDICT: Colour, character, and convenience share centre-stage here.
