A relatively recent build, but enmeshed with history.

No 24 Mitchell’s Court has been owned by the same family since day one around 11 years ago.

This four-bed detached Kerry Pike property has a heat recovery system and solar panels, as well as Neff appliances and a floored attic with Stira access.

The development of just over 30 houses is named for local republican figure and author Maud Mitchell (1891-1972), who wrote about the Irish Civil War and once owned the land on which Mitchell’s Court was built in the noughties.

There are two living rooms to the front of the house here, separated by the hall, so you could easily have a quiet evening in one while a blockbuster plays in the other. One room connects to the large and very bright L-shaped kitchen/dining at the back of the house which has triple aspect windows and sliding doors to the super-neat garden.

Upstairs, the main bedroom is across the landing from the other three and has a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite bathroom.

The current owners are moving closer to family, but staying on the west side of the city. They particularly love the open-plan space and the garden.

Along with their children, they say they have made excellent use of all the local facilities ranging from a creche to primary school, GAA club, and tennis club.

Kerry Pike National School is within walking distance, and Cloghroe National School is also nearby. The classic Cork acronym triple combo, UCC, MTU, and CUH, are all easily accessible, and Ballincollig Regional Park is an 8km spin away.

There’s history galore in the wider local area too. Kerry Pike was originally a toll gate or turnpike on a butter road from Kerry to the Cork Butter Market from the early 1750s until 1809. It’s described in good detail in Once Upon a Road by Joe Harrington.

Back at the house, there’s an electric car charging point and parking for three to four cars.

“It’s a beautiful house with landscaped surroundings and an exceptional sense of privacy. The house is spacious and finished to a very high standard,” notes Brian Olden of Cohalan Downing, who is guiding at €750k.

Recent sales of houses in this small development with generous greens include No 17 for €791k, while about eight homes sold for c €500k-plus.

VERDICT: A great example of a ‘best of both worlds’ architectural philosophy — a home that respects the rustic, stone-walled aesthetic of traditional country cottages at its frontage, while opening up into a contemporary, light-filled, and energy- efficient family home.
