THE origin of the name put on No 14, at the city end/start of Cork’s Model Farm Road is a bit of a mystery: it’s called Ceann Mara, meaning the head of the sea, or perhaps headland?

In any case, ‘tis far from the sea this mid-1900s three-storey, six-bed family home is located, set as it is, high and dry in Cork’s settled western suburbs.

Ceann Mara was on the nameplate on the entrance pillar when the house last sold, back in 1995 and the owner since has happily stuck with it for nigh on 30 years now, say the joint selling agents, as their vendor prepares to up anchor, with a trade-down prospect lined up.

The well-kept home, with long back garden, is in a prime city nexus, and is already under early offer at €600,000, some €10k over its €590k launch price, with families again to the fore, and within the price grasp of a wider range than with the several recent Model Farm Road new homes schemes. Ceann Mara/aka No 14 is one of a dozen or so south-facing family houses (mostly semi-s) between Dennehys Cross and Bishopstown Park. It faces over the Model Farm Road towards the RC Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, and obliquely over towards the old Dennehy’s Ford garage, due (long overdue,) for replacement and redevelopment, with a food hall and 28 apartments in a four-storey building now through planning.

With inter-linked reception rooms and an attached 2, Ceann Mara is within a walk of UCC, MTU, the Bon Secours, Wilton and the CUH, say the joint selling agents Malcolm Tyrrell of Cohalan with Peter Skuse of Cahalane Skuse and they say it’s ideal for a family with children going through the various tiers of the education cycles.

VERDICT: Uber-handy location, and quieter than you’d think as the traffic lights slow movement down.

And, the name? Well, even if the name Ceann Mara stays on the pillar, the pillar will have to move, as the BusConnect plans envisage shearing a few metres off the front of houses all out along the Model Farm Road, and No 14 will be no different.
