In Irish folklore, the apple tree is one of the three sacred trees.

Last year I took myself and my daughter off to the garden centre, and for the first time she chose some fruit trees to plant.

We came home with two apple trees, a Cox’s orange pippin and a Discovery, along with a plum tree and a few blueberry bushes. It was her first foray into gardening, and I think she humoured me at the time more than anything else.
