Should I be feeding my hanging baskets and pots every time I water them?
Right now, your hanging baskets and pots should be at their peak, brimming with flowers and foliage, but also at their hungriest. Because container plants have limited compost to draw nutrients from, it’s essential to feed them regularly to keep the display going.
At this stage in the summer, I would certainly feed them regularly. If you are using a homemade plant feed and it is well diluted, then I would feed, perhaps not every time you water, but certainly once or twice a week.
If you are using a shop-bought plant food, then follow the advice on the label and use it as regularly as you can. Don’t overdo it, though, for if you use too much plant food, you could end up burning the plants.
Many gardeners follow the “weakly, weekly” rule, a half-strength feed each time you water ensures a steady supply without risking fertiliser burn.
If you’re watering daily in hot weather, using a reduced-strength feed stops you from overloading the plants, while still providing the nutrients needed for continuous flowering. Look for a balanced or high-potash feed to encourage more blooms and sturdier growth.
Also, remember to deadhead regularly. Feeding alone won’t keep baskets looking their best if spent flowers are left in place. With consistent water, feed, and a quick tidy, your pots and baskets should stay good and vibrant well into autumn.
