Question

I have a hydrangea in my garden in Kerry, but we are moving to Cork. Is it safe to move the hydrangea now?

Answer

No, now is not the right time to move your hydrangea. The best time to transplant it is during the winter months, ideally between November and February, when the plant is fully dormant.

Moving it in summer or while it’s actively growing will cause too much stress. It is inevitable that there will be damage to the root system when lifting it, and the plant will not be able to tolerate that now.

In winter, the plant isn’t putting energy into foliage or flowers, so it can better handle the shock of being moved and focus on re-establishing its root system.

Wait until winter, prepare the new planting hole in advance, and water well after moving. Patience will give your hydrangea the best chance to thrive in its new location.
