For character lamps with retro-style bulbs, you will need to replace these with what is termed filament bulbs when they fail. You can use screw-in bulbs that stand in the place of shades and regular light fittings. They are generally anti-glare low-lumen bulbs with small E27 fittings, so work best in groups.
