A popular Kerry pub seeking to retain its outdoor dining and beverage area has had its case appealed to the planning commission by a neighbouring business owner.

Murphy’s Pub, located on Strand Street in Dingle, sought permission to retain an existing structure along the eastern gable of the pub, which is currently used as an outdoor seating area for the business.

The pub received the green light from Kerry County Council to retain the seating area, with permission granted on a temporary basis for two years, with the structure being removed in its entirety after that period and the area being returned to its former state.

Kerry County Council also ruled that the pub must pay a contribution of more than €250 to the council in respect of roads and transport, as well as community and amenity infrastructure benefiting the development.

However, the plans have since been appealed to An Coimisiún Pleanála by Jonathon Moriarty, owner of the neighbouring Colony Townhouse.

In his objection, Mr Moriarty said his concerns relate to a single-storey structure erected a few years ago “without planning permission.”

“This is of course, unacceptable and shows no regard for [the planning commission], the laws of the land or indeed for all citizens, not only of Dingle," Mr Moriarty said, adding that it was a "blatant and very obvious unauthorised development smack in the middle of a very busy area."

The business owner said the structure “should have been removed immediately upon construction,” adding that it would adversely affect the Inner relied road from Goat Street to Strand Street, which Mr Moriarty called “one of the most important infrastructural proposals for Dingle Town in recent years.”

An Coimisiún Pleanála are due to decide on the case by March 3rd, 2025.
