In a week when all things green and Irish are being celebrated across the globe, this traditional green and white thatched cottage near Killeagh in East Cork has made rather a timely arrival on the market.

The type of property that often features on holiday postcards, it’s called White O’Morn after the cottage in John Ford’s Quiet Man.

In addition to being admirers of traditional Irish properties, the UK couple who bought, renovated and extended Cork’s take on White O’Morn around 20 years ago, are obviously big fans of John Wayne.

Traditionally this type of cottage might have had a Sacred Heart painting over the living-room fireplace, but this one has a framed replica of one of the Duke’s rifles and a collection of plates showing him in full cowboy regalia.

The original thatched building at the front has a sitting room with a fireplace and timber-panelled ceiling as well as a utility area, a bathroom and two bedrooms, one en suite. In an extension at the rear there’s another bedroom and a kitchen.

Although in need of modernisation and upgrading, the property has immense charm and character, says Michael Murray of Home & Away Real Estate, guiding €253,000.

“Who doesn’t dream of a nice thatched cottage in the Irish countryside?” he asks, noting that it’s in a peaceful location and on an acre of land.

White O’ Morn is located around 5km from Killeagh and almost 10km from Youghal.

Verdict: The type of traditional cottage Ireland is famous for.
