Mature dormer near Bandon has a Nordic sensibility

Scandi-cool four-bed home near Bandon, on 0.8 of an acre, has sharp roof slopes, and a feature Gothic window, says Tommy Barker.

There's a low-key, cool, Scandi sort of decor vibe going on at this 20-year old, ‘sensibly mature’ dormer home, 10 minutes from Bandon, in a place called Knockmacool.

Just a few miles out the N71 from Bandon, hang a right, and head towards Enniskeane, and before you get there you’ll find Knockmacool, and this chic, four-bed, 2,000 sq ft pad, with lofted, 500 sq ft double garage.

Priced at €370,000 by Clon-based agent, Martin Kelleher, it’s on c 0.8 of a well-landscaped acre, with some interesting roof slopes, design touches, and a signature piece, a Gothic-style, arched window as a centrepiece, in a triple aspect and very homely kitchen/dining room.

That feature window looks out over the front drive and house approach, and sets up expectations of quality within, notions which aren’t disabused, once past the off-set front door, and along the bright, wood-floored entrance hall.

The kitchen/dining room within is indeed the scene-setter, thanks as much to the presence of the large, wood-burning stove as to the arched window.

The room has high, vaulted ceilings and terracotta flooring, bright and warm and inviting in character.

The dining end looks out past the Gothic window; the kitchen’s at the far end with painted units, has wide, casement-style windows on two sides, access to a utility, plus there’s a door mid-ships in the kitchen, to the side garden, and to a lovely, sheltered patio, part-roofed with seating terraces and with some climbing plants.

Across the hall, a front living room has a slight bay window, and this room has a further stove, again set against a simple, painted backdrop, with slender, overhead mantle.

Further along, at ground level (internal doors are attractive, painted with vertical panelling) are three ground-floor bedrooms, or two, plus office, and a main bathroom. Upstairs is a further bedroom, a shower room and a living area/optional bedroom five.

VERDICT: cool, calm and collected.
