Sloping site benefits from split level design in Mallow, Co Cork

Nad, Mallow  €285,000

Size: 148 sq m (1,600 sq ft)

Bedrooms: 3

Bathrooms: 3

THE owners of this architect-designed home called Seefin, hidden in a lovely wooded setting between Nad and Lyre near Mallow, have had the very occasional sense of deja vu, spotting near-identical homes to theirs, in settings as far away as Limerick and Galway.

However, it’s not entirely a coincidence, they selected the design to suit their sloping site from a popular book of house plans published by Cement Roadstone in the 1980s.

They chose well, because the result at Seefin so much suits their 1.75 acre site and aspect, with lovely long valley views from their entry level/first floor drawing room’s two feature projecting box windows in particular.

(Funny how some design touches like that come back into fashion too; driving from Muskerry to this Nad nest rural home, you might even spot a 21st century, architect-designed upmarket home with similar jutting windows, clad in zinc, looking a contemporary design, yet Seefin’s owners opted for it 30 years ago.)

Now trading down to an eco-friendly home the retired couple have commissioned from architect Neil Kane, in Kanturk town, Seefin’s for sale, listed at €285,000 with estate agent Liam Murphy.

Here, you’ll get a spacious, split level detached, well-built, with some feature soaring ceilings, clad in antique Canadian pine salvaged from an old mill’s beams and repurposed (the same nicely hued pine also yielded timber for the stairs).

There’s a very large lounge with stove, kitchen with cheery red cooker, study with lofted mezzanine, and three lower ground level bedrooms, one en suite with garden access.

Add in an acre of paddock with the 1.75 acres, double garage, workshop, veg beds and a polytunnel with rainwater harvesting, and its’s quite the affordable lifestyle option.

VERDICT: Go See-fin.
