Georgian elegance has been restored to both the interior and the front entrance of this three- storey property at 1 Shortcastle Street in Mallow town.

The elaborate brass knocker featuring a laurel-wearing Roman god, is now gleaming as brightly as it must have done when the terraced house was built in 1780. The doorway, with its cobweb fanlight, flanking pilasters, and plinth, has also been freshly renewed with paint although the roughcast rendered walls at the front have been left untouched, probably in the interest of conservation. When the current owners, a UK couple, bought the property in 2015, it had been turned into a number of apartments and its Georgian elegance had been sadly neglected.

“The owners did some research on historic properties in Mallow and restored it as much as possible to its original state,” says John Singleton of Sherry FitzGerald O’Donovan who is now quoting a guide of €250,000 for the 1,900 sq ft house.

According to its Buildings of Ireland listing, No 1 Shortcastle was part of a pair of two-bay houses and is noteworthy for its well-executed doorway which provides a decorative focal point to its façade.

Since buying it the owners made the ground floor of the property into a self-contained one-bed apartment with a kitchen/sitting room and an en suite bathroom.

It is on the first floor that Georgian elegance is most in evidence. The spacious drawing room with its 11 ft high ceiling, large shuttered windows, and original fireplace, has cornicing, dado and picture rails and timber panelling. An archway at the side opens in to a separate dining area with timber panelling. Also at this level there’s a spacious lounge as well as a kitchen with modern fitted units. The top floor has a renovated bathroom and three carpeted bedrooms, one with a fireplace.

At the rear is an attractive graveled courtyard garden enclosed by old stone walls.

Fitted with double glazing and gas heating, the property’s C3 BER rating is good for its age.

Mr Singleton says the location, within a few minutes walk of Mallow’s main street is excellent and that properties as well renovated are rare in the town centre.

VERDICT: Elegant once again
