Harbour home at Alta Terrace has a real sense of history
SOME of the very best period homes and terraces in Cork aren’t to be found in the city and current hub of commerce — they were built around the harbour, in places like Cobh and Monkstown in the 19th century when the region’s wealth ebbed and flowed on the tides, ocean crossings and naval campaigns during times of Empire’s might, and military and naval adventures.
With renewed appreciation of Cork harbour, the past decade or two has seen much renewal of such Victorian gems, and in Monkstown, a few terraces in particular stand out, such as Alta Terrace and Sydenham Terrace.
Just a year ago, a detached former rectory at the end of Alta Terrace, called Summerland, sold for €595,000, with major further investment going into it, and now in another wintry month, comes No 2 Alta Terrace.
A three-storey, over-basement semi-d of almost 3,000 sq ft, No 2 carries a €395,000 asking price with appreciative estate agent and local Monkstown resident Stephen Clarke of REA O’Donoghue Clarke
He notes its listing in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage which says of No 2 “this fine house is one of a group of ten semi-detached houses that is an important contributor to the distinct character of Monkstown.
These houses were built for wealthy permanent and temporary residents when the area became popular in the nineteenth century as a resort destination.”
No 2 has kept much, but not all of its heritage features, and has off-street parking, six bedrooms, lovely proportioned main living areas, and harbour views past its south-east facing gardens include Monkstown’s new marina.
A lovely prospect and project
