THERE were sails as far as the eye could see in the past week in front of this large, three-storey period family home at Cork’s Weavers Point — up for sale with the option of a boat mooring, plus a 38’ ocean-going Jeanneau yacht, if a buyer so wishes.

The biennial Irish sailing regatta Cork Week brought hundreds of sailors and assorted craft to Cork harbour Monday to Friday, with departures now today likely to see the last flotillas of competitors leaving Roches Point behind them, again in full view of this property called Beaumont.

Hoping to have wind in its own sale, the 1,800 sq ft four-bed house is a summer market arrival, carrying a €395,000 asking price via Garry O’Donnell of ERA Downey McCarthy. An extra €40k or so will get you a fine boat, and mooring at Crosshaven, to go with it for lifestyle hunters.

Mr O’Donnell describes the views as breathtaking, a full 180 degree ocean span, with Roches Point lighthouse and the harbour mouth off to the left.

Well-kept, and on tended gardens (with some site/extension potential) Beaumont has attractive old-world charm, with stripped pine doors, good fireplaces, high ceilings and some exposed stone walls internally, and the vendor who’s been here 28 years is a an accomplished woodworker, making his kitchen units from salvaged timbers, complete with driftwood handles.

Rooms at ground level include two receptions (one’s an optional reception/ground floor bed five, with garden access) kitchen and pantry. The first floor houses two bedrooms and a large main bathroom, and the top floor has two further beds.

The semi-detached house is up above road level, with good boundaries and the back garden is very productive, with a market garden range of growing frames and sheds.

Now selling up as the house is too large with its family grown up and moved on, the vendor recalls summer months spent at Weavers Point, but only happened on this house by chance.

The ‘For Sale’ sign had fallen down and it was poking out through a hedge. “I thought the stake might take someone’s eye out, and pushed it back in, and up popped the For Sale board — and I bought the house.”
