Tuck into Clon’s Lotto lucky shop

A corner shop in one of the very best locations in West Cork’s Clonakilty has come for sale — after three generations in the one family’s ownership, and several lucky Lotto jackpot sales as well.

Dating back to 1912 in the care of the McCarthy clan is the three-storey building at 63 Pearse Street, now overlooking the recently upgraded Astna Square, which has created a new hub in the town’s centre.

It’s being sold by David and Kay McCarthy, as a going concern, and they’ll be big boots to fill — vendor David played in the 1973 All Ireland when Cork beat Galway, and for sterling midfield service he won a place on the All Star team in 1976.

Selling agent Ray O’Neill is looking for a substitute for the McCarthys, and guides at €295,000. He notes the business is about being in the right place at the right time — it’s in the business midfield, and has probably the highest footfall of any corner property in Clon.

The traditional business has concentrated on newsagency, with confectionery, Lotto, cards and toys. There are 400 sq ft at ground level, and three floors in all plus attic.

“It’s an ideal opportunity for a buyer interested in a quality business in a prime town centre location that is established and easily managed,” notes Sherry FitzGerald’s Ray O’Neill.
