Opportunities to live close to the water’s edge, near Kenmare town don’t come up too often.
Selling agents Tom Spillane says that Bay View, a 150-year-old semi-detached cut stone cottage is now the only property on the market located within 300m from the town centre which has water frontage.
“The setting, the views and the proximity to town make this very unique,’’ he explains.
The property is one of a group of four cottages which were originally built as part of the Landsdowne Estate. When the current owners bought it six years ago they kept the original cut stone frontage but transformed the rear of the property with a large extension.
The cottage now has in the region of 1,800 sq ft of living space — double its original. It has gas central heating, which is underfloor at ground level and double glazed sash windows. Accommodation in the original part of the house includes a tiled sitting room with a fireplace as well as a library with fitted book shelves. In the newer section there’s a kitchen /dining room and a sun lounge with double doors opening out on to a patio.
Upstairs there are now three bedrooms including one en suite. All rooms have sea views.
VERDICT: Set against a wooded background, the cottage has a lawned garden and water frontage. Perfect.
Islevaroo in Ballinlough may require a makeover for the 21st century, but it’s well located and full of potential.
This mature three-bed semi detached house is situated at 9 Clanrickarde Estate, off the Boreenmanna Road. With a floor area of 1,160 sq ft it offers good living space and has a good sized garden with a detached garage. Built in the 1960s it has been fitted with oil-fired central heating, but much of the original décor and fittings remain.
Selling agents Timothy Sullivan and Associates says it will require some modernising and upgrading, “but it has been underpinned in the last six or seven years which is very significant,’’ says Mr Sullivan. It’s expected that viewers will see beyond the flowery carpets and tiled fireplaces and look at the potential of a mature house within easy reach of the city centre. Mr O’Sullivan says the garden offers room for expansion. Typical of semi-detached properties of this era, there’s a sitting room, a dining room and a kitchen, all with tiled fireplaces. One of the bedrooms has a tiled fireplace and the bathroom has a shower. In front of the house there’s a lawn, to the side is the detached garage and a parking area. At the rear there’s a smaller lawned garden.
VERDICT: Worth the effort of a makeover
It looks pretty staight forward from the outside, but at the back, no 1 Grange Erin Mews packs a punch.
This detached, four bed house on the outskirts of Douglas village, on Grange Hill, has outstanding views over the south side and northside of Cork city and to make the most of the vista, has a double-decker patio at the back and the side.

Inside, it’s bright and clean with a good kitchen and dining room a comfortable sitting room and living room with interconnecting doors and a separate, fourth bedroom at ground level with guest bathroom. Overhead, there’s an en suite master, two further bedrooms and main bathroom. And with a good garden, in a mature location buyers could add on an extension at the rear which would capitalitse on the aspect. Kevin Barry of Barry Auctioneers is the selling agent.
VERDICT: One to see for property hunters seeking somewhere Southside.
