Fishing for offers on Suirside lodge

DON’T spare the rod – you can angle to your heart’s content at this River Suir fishing lodge at Knocklofty.

A mile of single-bank fishing rights comes with Knocklofty fishing cottage, a modest, two-bed home on 10 acres of Co Tipperary land, near Clonmel.

When you hear mention of fishing rights, you expect sale sums to go stratospheric – but not necessarily so in this case: try €290,000 for size, via agent Edward Townshend of Colliers International.

He says the property is “a charming fishing cottage, originally part of the Donoughmore estate,” and that the River Suir “has the distinction of producing Ireland’s record rod-caught salmon.”

That fish weighed 57lbs taken on the fly – but that was in 1874. Now, the Suir is more successfully fished for brown trout.

“It still produces the occasional spring salmon and, in some seasons, when conditions are right, it gets a good run of salmon,” say Colliers.

Four miles from Clonmel, in good sporting countryside teeming with wildlife, the cottage is up a long, wooded avenue, with a narrow path leading to the Suir.

A buyer, with or without flies on them, is expected.
