Beach life on offer for hobby farmer

MILES of sandy beaches are at your disposal in the case of this Redbarn Strand land sale.

A new market offering, and butting right up against some new holiday home developments, is this beguiling east Cork property mix, which includes almost 22 acres of land with mature trees, a 25-year-old bungalow and an older, single-storey farmhouse with some outbuildings.

It is being offered for sale as one lot with the estate agent, who guides it at €800,000 — a price which reflects the worth most likely to appeal to a private buyer looking for a hobby farm and fine coastal house with easy beach access, rather than developers.

“This rare coastal site is nicely positioned, with direct private access to one of Ireland’s most spectacular sandy beaches, Redbarn Strand at the mouth of the River Blackwater in Youghal Bay,” says Mairead Keogh of Conn Keogh Auctioneers in Youghal.

She says the ’70s bungalow (which currently all but ignores its beach aspect, but would make a good basis for a spectacular upgraded house or complete new build, subject to planning) has views over the beach and bay to Capel Island, and the amenities of the Quality Hotel at Redbarn are a two-minute walk. There’s a bracing mile-plus walk back to Youghal itself along the beach.

The 21.75 acres of land is in two lots, c. four acres and 18 acres, with boreen access from the north, and is ideal for grass or tillage, say the selling agents.

The townland name is Clonard, indicating that this land is indeed a bit elevated, which gives it views over the surrounding area, while boggy Ballyvergan wildlife sanctuary is close by.

Cork city is just over a 30 minute commute away.
