GETTING better as it goes up: that’s a visitor’s impression at 3 Rockview Terrace, in the old heartland of Cork’s Montenotte.

The mid-terraced house dates to the mid-1800s, probably the latter half of a golden era for this northside and hillside suburb, which has some of Cork’s best houses and villas secreted among its wooded veins.

Montenotte shares with Sunday’s Well the distinction of a goodly supply of gracious period homes, with southerly aspects, river views and easy proximity to the city centre. The downside is neither area is as well serviced for shopping and other amenities as the more sprawling southside suburbs.
