Don’t go North to Alaska for this Anchorage in the sunny south west
The just-revamped house is close to the water’s edge and the warming Gulf Stream currents in West Cork which can mean semi-tropical plants easily acclimatise to the location.
This particular’s house’s setting is very particular: overlooking rugged Dunmanus Bay it is directly across the road from the Air India memorial, which commemorates the hundreds of lives lost when bombers targeted a civilian flight en route to Canada. The 20th anniversary of that tragedy occurs next June.
Keeping almost a sentinel watch over the memorial area (done by sculptor Ken Thompson) is the Anchorage, built several decades ago and now significantly upgraded by its vendor.
Close to where entertainer Graham Norton is still finalising his purchase of the period gem Ahakista House, Anchorage has an international feel to it, mainly down to its 1,000 sq ft terrace across its first floor level, and the ground level is largely a lad’s pad - there’s a 30’ by 24’ billiard/games room, double garage/boathouse, study, utility and entrance hallway.
The main living accommodation is overhead, with two bedrooms and a bathroom on each side wing (some with terrace access) and the main central section is largely given over to an open plan kitchen, living and dining area, with a solid fuel stove and access to the balcony.
Estate agent Charles McCarthy guides The Anchorage at €800,000, and notes that it has access to what is virtually a private shingle beach with scope for boat moorings.
Features include replacement PVC windows/French doors, electronic gates, 1.5 acres of grounds with pond, while heating is a mix of oil and electric.
