Horses for courses as Paddocks home looks a good bet
This was once the paddock of Douglas House, owned by the Horgan Family, who trained two English 2,000 Guinea winners in the late 1980s and early 90s.
And the equine connections continue because the Moloney family, who are now selling No 2, The Paddocks, hold the Farmer’s Royal Cup for racing. This was presented to the great-grandfather of the present family in 1911 by King George V. The cup, which took a stone of silver to make, was reputedly filled five times and more on the train back to their home in Knocklong, Co Limerick.
In fact, the cup was so big that Moloney babies would fit into it, says the vendor of No 2, the house to which the family moved when their farm in Knocklong was sold in the 1990s.
Now that the cupful of babies are fully grown, it’s time to move on for the Moloneys, so the fine five-bedroomed house is on the market with Sean McCarthy of ERA Downey McCarthy Murphy. Guiding at €900,000, the house should make well in excess of this, especially as a similar house nearby is making close to €950,000 at the moment.
With high ceilings and higher than standard door frames, there is an elegance to this property that’s immediately obvious. The main living room is big, 21’ by 13’, and to the side is a formal dining room.
A flight of steps lead up to the living rooms, with a large family room to the left with attractive, cut-out fireplace and fold-back doors to the conservatory.
Both these rooms face full south and adjoin the large kitchen, which also has a separate utility. Five bedrooms are ranged around the top landing and the master is has a dressing room and generous ensuite.
The remaining four rooms share a main bathroom and the beauty of the house is that it comes with a big attic space on the top floor, which could covert to another two rooms.
Number 2 also comes with a garage, and good gardens at the back with mature plantings.
