Editorial was dangerously intolerant of right-wingers

Your editorial (Irish Examiner, August 7) dealing with the attendance of young Fine Gael members at a conservative youth conference is dangerously intolerant of opposing views, and dangerously incendiary by attempting to link the inherent evil of white supremacy and racism to mainstream conservatism.

Your editorial (Irish Examiner, August 7) dealing with the attendance of young Fine Gael members at a conservative youth conference is dangerously intolerant of opposing views, and dangerously incendiary by attempting to link the inherent evil of white supremacy and racism to mainstream conservatism.

The conference attended is the youth wing of the Republican Party in the USA.

Your designation of this organisation as “far right” is contemptuous and falls into the normal left liberal tactic of putting anyone you disagree with into a bracket of people that it’s acceptable to ignore and ridicule.

It is this “basket of deplorables” tactic that helped give you Trump in the first place.

Trump has coarsened the public discourse, of that there is no doubt.

But attempting to suggest that he is partially responsible for the El Paso attack by dishonestly selecting from the shooter’s manifesto says it all about the agenda that you wish to serve.

If we are to apply this standard you wish to posit across the board, I assume that Bernie Sanders was someway tangentially responsible of the shooting of senator Steve Scalise in 2017, as he was a supporter inspired by Bernie’s hard left rhetoric.

I can also assume that the hard left are somehow responsible for the Ohio shooting, as you selectively left out the fact from your divisive missive that the Ohio shooter was a far-left antifa supporter.

Your call on the EU to take a hard line on Poland to fall into line by with “liberal values” and your decrying of anybody to the right of centre or holding conservative views as beyond the pale serves only to alienate a large body of sensible, conservative, right-wing people.

If the mainstream mock them and tarnish them with the labels so favoured by the leftist media and elites, don’t be surprised when they go looking for a home on the fringes where they’ll be listened to.

The left’s intolerance and lunacy is doing more to support the far right than the Trumps of this world.
