It was most heartening to read the letter ‘Shannon Airport is a ‘de facto US military base’’ (Irish Examiner, July 26) from US army veteran Gene Marx.
It is surely right and just that he should attract attention of the Irish public to the two elderly US Veterans for Peace, Ken Mayers and Tarak Kauff, aged 82 and 77 respectively, who were arrested on St Patrick’s Day last for drawing attention to the truth of what is going on at Shannon’s ‘de facto military base’, Shannon Airport.
Having been imprisoned in Limerick gaol for almost a fortnight whilst awaiting trial they then had their passports impounded for the crime of trying to highlight the spinelessness of successive Irish governments in letting warmongering US governments continue to use Shannon Airport to launch their murderous invasions in the Middle East and elsewhere.
We the citizens of Ireland are therefore complicit in the massive bloodshed and destruction which successive US governments have visited upon hundreds of thousands of undeserving human beings.
What sort of a country has our once proud Republic of Ireland degenerated into I have to ask? I feel sure that the majority of my fellow Irish citizens do not condone such mayhem and murder in their names.
We owe a debt of gratitude to the two courageous army veteran grandfathers, Mr Kauff and Mr Mayers, for highlighting this outrageous situation, and it is time we all shouted stop to our present government who, like their several predecessors, appear to be deaf to the demands of decency and humanity.
Why must Ireland continue to jump when Uncle Sam issues orders, more especially now that you know who is in the White House?
