Letter to the Editor: Time has come to wind up Cruelty Inc
The Irish greyhound industry has been exposed as a fetid petri dish of animal abuse and a shyness for the truth. The recent RTÉ Investigates programme represents a tipping point in the campaign to abolish activities that use greyhounds as gambling instruments.
After years of telling it as it is, animal rights campaigners have been vindicated in this brutally visually honest telling of how greyhound racing and hare coursing is conducted in Ireland. Any attempt to defend the indefensible must be swept aside like the pap it represents. Claims that this is a minority-led behaviour within the industry are delusional.
It is hard to credit that a greyhound, one of nature’s most gentle and trusting dogs, is lumbered with ownership by those who have a concrete heart enjoying associate membership of the human race. That the Irish Government is funding illegal animal abuse to the tune of €16m (2019) has to be seen as an abuse of taxpayers’ money.
As for businesses who still believe that supporting greyhound racing and hare coursing represents good marketing then you really deserve a customer drought. It’s apt that even digital Ireland represents greyhounds as a product.
Typing the word greyhound into the Google search engine and pressing return will display in the first search result the name of a canine named waste company. The process of winding up Cruelty Inc. T/A the Irish greyhound industry should start immediately.
