Readers' Blog: We are to blame for decades of clerical abuse

I am delighted that in the end, we have found the culprit for all the abuse of children and women that has occurred in our country. Who would have thought that it would be an 81-year-old man that up to last weekend had only spent three months in our country?
We love to have someone to blame and fair play to An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar for calling him out.
The truth is we are collectively responsible for the society we live in.
Who said stop when the families handed over their “fallen” daughters to these institutions? Who said stop when their babies were taken from them and sent to other countries? Who said stop when the State broke up struggling families and put their children into care? Who said stop when Irish priests brothers and nuns abused these citizens?
The shame of this inaction lies with us alone. This is the way we handled a perceived problem and now want this man, a foreigner, to apologise for it all. If we don’t accept responsibility for the country we live in we will continue to make more mistakes at the expense of the most vulnerable in our society.
But fear not we have collectively decided on how to deal with unwanted citizens that bring shame and hardship on us. We’ve found a solution.
The Final solution.
