We must all welcome the statement by An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to Pope Francis, that there must be zero tolerance towards those who abuse children and facilitate that abuse.
Crimes against children are the most heinous of crimes and sexual abuse of children is particularly serious, but by far the most serious crime against children is the killing of children.
Tens of thousands of children have been killed in unjustified wars in the Middle East.
Pope Francis has spoken out several times about violence in the Middle East and on July 7, 2018, he referred to the “murderous indifference” of the great powers towards the violent wars in the Middle East.
What is happening is not just “indifference” but active participation in these wars by the great and not-so-great powers.
Successive Irish governments since 2001 have played a shameful role in facilitating these wars by allowing US military use of Shannon Airport.
It’s now time for Mr Varadkar to live up to his fine words, spoken to Pope Francis, that zero tolerance must be applied to those who facilitate the abuse of children.
Facilitating the killing of innocent children is occurring almost daily at Shannon Airport. Our Government must stop facilitating the killing of children right now.
