Reader's Blog: There are much better ways to spend the ‘granny grant’

It would seem that the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport is in great peril of having his sometimes associated appellation of Lord extended in full format to ‘Lord Ross of the Granny Grant’ in the eyes of many citizens.

While this title may sound comical and absurd, it pales in the context of his proposal to bestow a €1,000 handout on grandparents who look after their grandchildren.

If there is a substantive issue involved here, it must keep the child at its core, so may I suggest to the minister, and his supporting comrades in the Independent Alliance, that the grandchildren of the nation would better appreciate their parents having access to an affordable and sustainable childcare system which does not ignore the ‘stay-at-home’ Mam or Dad, and a medical system that does not imprison their grandparents from them, on seemingly never ending waiting lists for hip or knee replacement or cataract surgery.
