Readers blog: Keeping rate of abortion low following legislation
For the second time in three years, Ireland has voted overwhelmingly in favour of progressive social change.
Let’s hope this is the last time we see citizens of this country forced to expose their pain publicly in order to be heard.
There can be no mistaking that public opinion is no longer guided by the moral minority.
The proposed abortion legislation will be passed.
However if we are serious about reducing the rates of abortion we must also address the issues of readily available contraception and non-faith based sex education.
The result of this referendum is a clear sign that there is a mandate to make changes in these areas, and although The Iona Institute and others will oppose any moves to educate our young people, we now know that they do not speak for us.
