If I reach into the heart of just one person...
Luckily, he and our family there escaped the devastating earthquake. In desperation he has requested me to appeal to you to donate as much as possible - even €1 can turn around the life of someone who is destitute, orphaned, maimed and homeless.
In these times of collection box and appeals fatigue, it is hard to stimulate interest, but if I reach into the heart of just one person, it will have been worth it.
Pakistan has a very long association with Ireland especially in the medical field - our hospitals are staffed in large numbers by many gifted, gentle-natured medics. I know from personal experience the feeling of helplessness when living far away from home and not being able actively to participate in rescue efforts... to want to hold a weeping mother or frightened child, or stand shoulder to shoulder with a father as he pulls at mortar with his bare hands.
I just wish to put a personal touch to a very moving plight. Each of us has a role to play in the cycle of life. We may not know how important our role is at times, but I have no doubt you will save the life of a child or someone injured or bereaved if you collect your loose change and put it to use.
TV pictures can overwhelm and even desensitise us. But we are all vulnerable in this world and we are closer to each other than we think.
Pakistani culture revolves very much around family life - just like Ireland.
I am proud of our generosity to every appeal through history. This particular one just happens to be personal.
Thank you for your time and, hopefully, your donations. Our own Concern charity is an obvious choice. I trust them with my donation.
