Driving children safer than letting them walk

IN your editorial of February 20, 2004, you dealt with the huge numbers opting to drive their children to school rather than letting them cycle or walk. On many Cork roads you'd be taking your life into your hands to use them in any other way than as a motorist.

Driving children safer than letting them walk

One case in point is the Model Farm Road, off which there are a number of schools. To cycle or walk to school, I would have had to negotiate the bend at Inchigaggin daily. There is no footpath on either side of this dangerously narrow road, where cars routinely ignore the 30-mile speed limit. You would want to be very tired of life to attempt it on either a bicycle or on foot.

The Cork Planning Office is only around the corner and student accommodation is going up fast but no-one appears to have any interest in just how these students are to walk in and out on the Model Farm Road. It is only a matter of time until there is a fatality.
