Clamp down on tax dodging and discrimination by landlords
I just cannot wait for the second saga of the Ansbacher accounts, when it will be discovered in about another 20 years.
The thing that amazes me about all of this is that people are so caught up in these stories that they have failed to see that tax evasion is still being carried out by certain landlords of this country, even today, as they continue to advertise their properties with the proviso ‘No Rent Allowance Accepted (RA)’.
Landlords using this on their adverts are saying either:
a) I don’t want to register my property to the proper authorities because I’ll have to pay tax out of the rent that I will get from my tenant as it is classed as an income. Hence, a tax dodge; or
b) I won’t accept rent allowance because I’ll be stuck with unemployed tenants (discriminating against unemployed people).
If any landlord out there tries to say that there’s no tax on premises, they’re very much mistaken, unless they have of course no roof on their premises which would then be deemed as a derelict building.
But that still would not explain their discriminating advert against the unemployed. Everyone knows (except landlords, it seems) that unemployment is rising rapidly again in this country.
Landlords with these type of adverts should be hunted down by the tax man for attempted tax evasion or they should be sued by every unemployed person in this country for discrimination.
I only hope that Sinn Féin and the Greens put their heads together in the Dáil soon to create a voice and speak up for the people that voted them in. This they can do by putting some serious questions to Bertie Ahern. It’s been a long time since I heard him speak on this serious note.
