Republican myth behind the mayhem
They got to come down south and crack some heads, and Fianna Fáil and the PDs won back all those votes that they’ve been losing to the “Hello Mary Lou, Goodbye Farc” brigade.
I actually believe the Sinn Féin leaders who came out and condemned the attacks. They know that a lot of the hard work they’ve been doing down south went up in flames with all those BMWs that some people seemed to take exception to during the weekend.
However, watching the temporary destruction of all those streets synonymous with republican myth, I couldn’t help but think of Michael Collins, dead at only 31 in a ditch in circumstances not nearly as romantic as those depicted in Neil Jordan’s film. I wonder would he have gotten out of bed at all that morning if he could have foreseen what he was to give up his young life for.
Let each man and woman commemorate the 90th anniversary of the 1916 Rising in his or her own way. Otherwise it’ll be hijacked by republicans.
