No evidence of better deal for air travellers

RICHARD BARTON has my sympathy on the frequent lack of transparency in relation to the additional taxes and charges levied by airlines.

No evidence of better deal for air travellers

Last year I wrote to the Office of the Director of Consumer Affairs (ODCA) about a similar situation to that described in his letter (Irish Examiner, April 13). Their reply was that it would be ideal if a breakdown of taxes and charges were to be provided.

However, they added that as long as the consumer was made aware of the 'total cost' payable before making a booking, the practice of including additional fees and taxes was not in breach of consumer laws that the Department of Transport enforces. There was no indication that they intended to lobby for any change in legislation to require greater transparency for the consumer.
