Time restriction drives teens to binge-drink
I am from a small village in West Cork and find it virtually impossible to do anything at weekends. The nearest cinema is 20 miles away and the nearest shopping centres are at least 50 miles away. The bus services are non-existent after 6pm.
In my town, we have at least seven pubs and after 9pm I am not allowed into these places. I understand this in larger towns where they have sufficient amenities and are well equipped for teenagers.
The teenagers in my area now tend to go binge drinking. Which is safer? Getting drunk on a beach in the rain, or being in a safe environment, enjoying a few non-alcoholic drinks with some friends? There is less chance of alcohol abuse in a pub; it is a more respectable environment and people tend to behave maturely.
Teenagers are going to drink anyway if they want to, regardless of restrictions.
